Syrian Ambassador to the United States Imad Moustapha has been withdrawn following a similar move by the U.S., an embassy official said on Monday.""Ambassador Moustapha has been recalled for consultations,"" the official confirmed to Xinhua. The official offered no other details, but the move came after the U.S. withdrew its ambassador to Syria Robert Ford, citing "" credible threats"" against his safety.""Ambassador Robert Ford was brought back to Washington as a result of credible threats against his personal safety in Syria,"" State Department spokesman Mark Toner said earlier in the day in a statement.""At this point, we can't say when he will return to Syria,"" Toner said, adding ""it will depend on our assessment of Syrian regime-led incitement and the security situation on the ground.""Ford left Syria on Saturday for a ""two-week vacation,"" a second secretary at the U.S. embassy in Syria said.Ford has been asked to come home for consultations, but has not been withdrawn or recalled, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters on Monday at a regular news briefing.""First of all, we want a chance to consult with him, talk to him about how he sees the situation in Damascus,"" she said. ""It's also the case that, you know, the situation there is quite tense and we want to give him a little bit of a break.""She called on the Syrian government to ""immediately end its smear campaign of malicious and deceitful propaganda"" against Ford, denouncing what she called a campaign of ""regime-led incitement"" targeted personally at the envoy by the state-run media.""I want to say that we do expect Ambassador Ford will be returning to Damascus after his consultations are completed,"" the spokeswoman added. ""And it will be incumbent on the government of Syria to provide for his security when he returns and to meet its Vienna Convention obligations, just as we do in protecting Ambassador Moustapha here.""Ford had paid controversial visits to many restive areas in Syria in a show of support to anti-government protesters, as the Arab nation has been plagued by unrest since mid-March when protests erupted against President Bashar Assad's government. On Friday, Ford was hit again with eggs and tomatoes while he was visiting the central Midan neighborhood of Damascus.More than 3,000 people including army and security members have been killed in the turmoil, according to figures released by the United Nations. The U.S. and its European allies have slapped sets of sanctions on senior Syrian officials and entities, and called on Assad to step down."
