If you have having a bad day, or worse still a bad week then a fantasy book can come to the rescue - no other genre can offer the complete escapism that fantasy does. The Prophecy of the Kings trilogy by David Burrows is a trilogy that offers pure escapism; within its pages is everything that a fantasy fan needs to allow them to let their imaginations soar free.
David Burrows’ interest in fantasy began with The Lord of the Rings. Inspired by the epic tale he put pen to paper, determined to create a story with bold characters and an intriguing plot. In The Prophecy of the Kings he has certainly achieved his aim; the characters are memorable and the plot is fast-paced and exciting.
Book 1 is a journey to find what became of the Eldric, a mysterious race that disappeared from the land shortly after the Krell Wars. With them went their Narlassar sorcery, the only means to defeat the enemy should they rise to power again. Wizards are too feeble to fight as their powers are limited. Sorcery is much more powerful as it’s derived from the spirit world and the more commanding sorcerers harness their strength from demons, but that requires bravery for demons are not summoned lightly.
The main characters in book 1 are Kaplyn, Lars and Vastra. Vastra is ruthlessly ambitious and harbours a secret that he will kill to protect. He controls an imp, or at least thinks he does. He manipulates the other two men to help him seek an ancient talisman, with which he believes he can find the Eldric. The settings are vibrant, and their journey takes them through the magical ruins of Tanel and the majestic forest realm of Gilfillan. Then, deep in the heart of a mountain, their quest is put to the test. Betrayal sets off a series of events that has repercussions not only for the main characters but for everyone. A collision of power tears apart the very fabric between the worlds, the shade of a dead emperor crosses over, becoming one of the character’s shaol, a guardian spirit. Krell tribes gather and grakyn take to the air. The enemy has not been inactive; death knights and omnipotent priest warriors have been created and their god, Ryoch, seeks to replace the Kalanth, the Old Ones. Alliances, formed during the Krell Wars are broken, nation is set against nation and in the background Trosgarth seeks to resurrect Drachar. Only one man can stop him. A king foretold in a prophecy. A prophecy whose cryptic lines seem to point to one man, Prince Fiad. Fool or saviour?

This is solid fantasy; exactly what a fantasy doctor would order for those looking for an enjoyable escape from reality… fans of Tolkien, Hobb and Moorcock will love what they find here. Definitely recommended.
